Do you have an external USB charger? Sometime, the computer is not able to provide enough power to ipod and thus it will never charge. Plug your ipod into a wall charger.

Also you can take the ipod to any near by Apple store, no matter how old your ipod is. Take your ipod to the nearest location and they should be able to tell you what is going on with your ipod.
