Uninstall iTunes first: Open your Applications folder, and drag iTunes to the trash Restart your Mac and empty the trash to ensure iTunesHelper is not running and not installed Go to your Music directory and open up the iTunes folder Move iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml to your desktop Install the version of iTunes you've been trying to install Open it up, and go to File > Import Choose the iTunes Music Library.xml that's on the desktop This should rebuild your library/playlists You can now delete those library files on the desktop You should be good to go |

cool, thanks I'll give it a try, but before i go for it, as a backup plan just in case something goes wrong, would it work to move my itunes 8 application files to an external hard drive, and if so how would you go about it? or could i always just reinstall itunes 8 and use the same library files if need be?
thanks, Adam |

ok, so I followed your instructions, tried 7, which was weird, my playlists were all there but the contents within the playlists were only partially, like 60% there, which was odd and not workable. so i went back to 8, everything restored and now tried 6, the last one i could find, following the same steps but within the installer, it says it can't install it because there is 'nothing to install' and when you go to customize, the options are all greyed out with the word "skip" next to each installable option. anyone know what that is about?
thanks, Adam |

What version of iTunes 6 are you trying to download? The problem with the playlist is not the error in iTunes 7 that means your mmedia might be elsewhere.
Do a complete backup of you music library and then reinstall itunes 7 and see if that works. |

itunes 6.0.5, my OS is 10.4.11. my media might be elsewhere, i don't understand what you mean, when I reinstall 8 it all shows back up and works, so shouldn't it work in other versions too? the reason i'm going back to older versions is I'm trying to get back to the one where after burning a CD itunes retains it instead of instantly ejecting it, then enabling you to send the track names to the database. do you know how to figure out when that change was made? |
