Many of Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1's 57 bug fixes address problems that are either too technical for the average user to comprehend or that only an IT (Information Technology) professional or Web developer will encounter. But if the update does resolve a couple of problems you may recognize, including:

  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) email messages with pictures don’t print correctly from Outlook 2000. (Yes, this is an Outlook problem, but Internet Explorer causes it).
  • Dead links; you click a Web link and nothing happens, or an empty browser window opens.
  • An error message appears when you right-click a link and select Save Target As from the context menu.
  • You get an “access violation” message when you try to scroll a Web page containing a table, while working in a small IE window.
  • When you try to save or open an HTML page using the IE File menu’s Open or Save As command, the wrong file name appears in the File Name field, and you can’t open or save the file.
  • When a Web page contains EMF (Enhanced Windows Metafile) graphics, the graphics do not display completely in IE.
  • You receive three or more security warnings (“Security Alert: You are about to be redirected to a connection that is not secure…Do you wish to continue?”) when using Web-based programs.

If you’ve experienced any of these problems, you can probably correct them by installing IE6 SP1.
