    Unhappy Downloading itunes

The iTunes on my Windows Vista PC and my Classic iPod were functioning perfectly well. I don't know which version of iTunes I had, but whenever notifications would ask for updates, I never bothered to update it. A month ago, a notification about Apple Software Update or something (I don't remember the exact terminology) popped up. I okayed it, and the update happened automatically while I was connected to the internet.
Since then, whenever I try to open iTunes or try to play songs with iTunes, it gives an error message and says - "Quick time player needed" or something like that. Someone told me to uninstall and then re-install iTunes. Today I uninstalled iTunes, and 5 other applications - quick time, bonjour, apple software update, and 2 more - according to the instructions given on a website.
Now, I need to know which version of iTunes should I download? I happened to read that people with Classic iPod are having problems with iTunes 9, 9.2 etc?? The Apple website from where I'd downloaded iTunes years ago, has only the latest version, which people seem to have problems with. Apple has also taken note of this and said they'll do something about it, on some website I read. But I need to get my iTunes and iPod working again! The iPod is the Classic one, 20 GB, the very first one which was released. Please help!!

There are a lot of options to get back your iTunes working on your Classic IPOD... Just tell me what version did you try before which the Classic Ipod work...
