Default Skype for Vista Home Premium ?

I have recently purchased a HP desktop computer with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I'm wanting to install Skype (paid account) so I can make long distance calls to my family strung out across the country. Reading the Skype forum, it looks like a total nightmare! Apparently Skype & Vista are not very compatable. However, I did read one person's suggestion to download an "older version" of Skype for Vista...that it worked fine. This person neglected to say which older version however. Looking at the list of older versions...holy cow...where to even begin!

My OS:Vista Home Premiun 32 bit
My sound, video & game controller: Realtek Driver version 6.0.1.5377
    Processors: 2...Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 CPU 4400 @ 2.00Ghz

I'm not sure what information about my computer is needed to determine which would be the best older version of Skype to try. If someone tells me ...will post it.

Don't want to go through the headaches of trying to install a program that isn't going to work...and unfortunately, it would have to be a "Paid" account with Skype, as my older family members either do not have computers ...yep, those people are out there , or have dial up accounts...living in the boonies is happening too, especially here in western NC.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Well to start with the official answer, then it is that Skype does not currently support Windows Vista as of version 3.2. I've always used Windows XP so I'm really not sure how I can I answer this question. But if i were you and had to try testing diffrent versions, I would start trying versions Skype 2.6.0.103, Skype 2.5.0.82, and Skype 2.0.0.103.

I hope someone will also be able to help you here.

My skype never worked on Windows Vista. May be you should just go back to windows xp. Windows Xp is much more stable and widely supported by major apps.

Or wait until skype comes out with vista compatible installer.

Believe me, I'd love to go back to XP! My son gave me this new computer as a gift, which was very generous of him. He's a computer whiz himself, and while visiting he tried installing XP on this machine at my request, because I have several things that won't work with Vista, (like my Epson scanner...no driver updates for Vista...duh!)...and it wouldn't work...would not install XP ...conflicts. Apparently the mother board on this HP machine will NOT support XP, only Vista. And I read quite a bit online as well. Everything I read said it wouldn't work...alas. Once you've got Vista & it's particular support hardware in your machine, you're stuck with it I guess. Unless there is someone on here that can enlighten me as to "how to" put XP on my new machine??? Myself, I think it's a MS conspiracy...and they of course named their OS correctly...WINDOWS....it's always been full of holes

Any vista operating system computer can be downgraded to windows XP trust me. If you want AND if you have a CD of windows XP i can post here a step by step guide to reformat your computer and install windows XP so that skype will work 100%. Maybe there's something wrong about your sons way of installing XP so it doesn't work. If you want, i can help you out by posting that guide i told you.

Thanks and have a great day.

Yes, most of the companies today like HP/Compaq and others stop manufacturing products that supports XP. It will be hard to find XP supporting drivers for your HP machine. possible but hard.

But if roipatrick can get it done without any issues (I believe he can) then it would be great.

Please update us on this issue so we can further help you. Thanks.
