There's a patch yahoo released blocking every numeric user name. You on the other hand can use numeric and alphabetic user name combined.

Those are what we called "illegal yahoo id's" or "illy" for short. there are certain websites and applications that you can use to create those kind of ID's. but most them don't last long because if yahoo finds out about that application they immediately make a patch for it. most people buy those types of ID's primarily because it really looks good on chat rooms

I think they just wanted to make an account more secured than ever. Alphanumeric user name and passwords are easy to memorize by hackers while numeric account and passwords are different.
I think words are easier to memorize than equations.
