For all of you that need to do the same it's pretty easy:
I downloaded the 6.05 install file from from oldapps, uninstalled 7.01 and then re-installed 6.05. When I ran iTunes it did give me the error message that the library file was created in a new version and couldn't open, but I then deleted the 'itunes library.itl' file (in My Music > iTunes folder) and then replaced it with the backup that was automatically created when I installed 7.01 (in My Music > iTunes > Previous iTunes Libraries). iTunes then started up fine with all my music and playlists. And all the skipping and CPU bogging is better now.

Thanks again for the app download and advice on the forum!!
Cheers Marlowe, and to the site for returning me to the good old iTunes days, and without having to reconstruct my library and playlists!

Here's hoping Apple sort the new versions out soon.

edit: PS All my playcounts are still intact after restoring the "previous" itunes library.itl. And now my PC doesn't lock up between tracks - hurrah for green iTunes!

Default old iTunes installing - what about for MAC?

this whole thread is all wonderful - but i'm on a MAC.

When I put iTunes 7 into trash, it won't let me install version 6.05. Do I have to empty the trash? If so, how will I make sure iTunes will recognize my music?

    Thank you,
    kayla
p.s. if anyone knows how to convert m4p to mp3 - please let me know!

    Complicated answer:
iTunes will convert unprotected m4a files to mp3, but not m4p, because that would be converting digital rights protected files to unprotected files. To convert m4ps to m4as use jhymn ( http://hymn-project.org/ - mac or windows) with tracks bought with iTunes 5 or less. Lots of help on the website. Then you can convert to mp3 in iTunes (edit, preferences, advanced tab, impoting tab, import using mp3 encoder, then select, right-click, convert selection to mp3).

    Simple answer:
Burn to a CD and re-rip as mp3s.

Incidentally you will always lose more sound quality by converting from m4p to mp3, however you do it because they are both lossy formats (ie, not perfect).

Post Uninstall iTunes completely from your Mac

Drag the application's icon to the Trash.

Open the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder and look for one or more preference files named "com.apple.iTunes....plist" and drag them to the Trash.

Look in /Library/ folder for an iTunes folder and if you find one drag it to the Trash.

Look in /Home/Library/ folder for an iTunes folder and drag it to the Trash.

Last, in /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder look for two files with names com.apple.nnnnnnn.plist and drag them to the Trash.

Open Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) and in the process list look for iTunesHelper. Select it, then click on Quit Process icon. Quit or Force Quit the process.
Now open the Accounts preference pane, click on Login Items tab, look for the iTunesHelper entry and select it, then click the "-" button and remove it from the list.

    Empty the Trash.

This should fully remove iTunes and its associated files/folders.

I recently upgraded to itunes 7. I origionally had it set to sync with my ipod manually because after I put songs onto my ipod I delete it from my computer, due to a lack of suficcient hardrive space. I had all of the mp3 files on my external harddrive but after that fell off of my desk and broke, all of my music is contained on just my ipod. I am currently overseas and my origional cds are back in the States.

The problem that I have is that somehow when I upgraded to itunes 7 it reset my manual snyc preference to auto sync. Now I cannot attach my ipod without it attempting to delete all of the songs off of my ipod (therefore I unplug it before it attempts to do so). And I cannot change the syncing preference without first attaching the ipod. If I rmember, the old itunes used to allow the changing of this preference without having to first sync up the ipod.

So what I did was delete itunes 7 and instal version 6. However, I am unable to find out where the syncing option is and when I hook up my ipod, it is not recognied by itunes though it is recognized by My Computer.

Anyways my biggest issue is figuring out how to change the syncing preferences without first hooking up my ipod and having itunes wipe out my ipod library. On the apple forums they say to hold down ctrl, alt and shift or ctrl and alt but after trying that several times. It does not work.

Does anyone have a clue on how to fix these problems?

    Thanks so much

You can Turn off auto sync within iTunes and enable disk mode
Use copy pod (freeware) to extract the music files from your ipod http://www.copypod.net/
Recreate the library folder using iTunes and then re-sync.

Not sure if you can fully backup playlists, ratings etc with the latest version, but you can definitely extract all your music files. you might want to backup all of your music first before messing with the Auto-sync features in iTunes.

I also found some useful links here...

    Default It doesnt work :-(

I also have had problems when I upgraded to itunes 7. I couldn't start the program when I upgraded. But after I had tried to start the program I wasn't able to start some other programs like winamp or Internet explorer and I wasn't able to restart og shut down my computer. Then I found this site, and I uninstalled itunes, and downloaded an older version. I did all the things mentioned in this thread, but the problem remained after installing older version which I previously was able to run. I have now tried to install alot of the older versions, but I still cannot start the program, and after trying to start the program I'm still not able to start other programs like winamp and IE and cannot restart or shut down my computer...

What should I do now? What is wrong?

    Please help me!

What happens when you completely remove
    iTunes
. Do all programs work fine; including shutdown and restart functions?
