Question Trying to get older version of iTunes installed?

I have had a problem with getting iTunes installed ever since I tried to install version 5. Evidently there was an issue with that install and it would give an error message that some of the installation files were corrupt and then freeze up. The only way it could be ended was to end from task manager.

Ever since then I have tried almost every new version and continue to get the same error "Unable to remove old version of iTunes".

I noticed this site referenced on a post in the apple disscussion forum and started thinking that maybe I could re-install the iTunes version 4.8 and see if that would function or not.

I downloaded the 4.8 version and now when I try to install it, I get a message saying that a new instance of the installer cannot be created.

    Any ideas?

If I could get 4.8 to work, then maybe I could use "add/remove" to uninstall it and then go to a newer version. At least that is what I would like to do.

Did you try the following to remove itunes completely from you Mac?

Drag the application's icon to the Trash.

Open the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder and look for one or more preference files named "com.apple.iTunes....plist" and drag them to the Trash.

Look in /Library/ folder for an iTunes folder and if you find one drag it to the Trash.

Look in /Home/Library/ folder for an iTunes folder and drag it to the Trash.

Last, in /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder look for two files with names com.apple.nnnnnnn.plist and drag them to the Trash.

Open Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) and in the process list look for iTunesHelper. Select it, then click on Quit Process icon. Quit or Force Quit the process.
Now open the Accounts preference pane, click on Login Items tab, look for the iTunesHelper entry and select it, then click the "-" button and remove it from the list.

    Empty the Trash.

This should fully remove iTunes and its associated files/folders.
After doing all that, you will need to download iTunes 7.0.1 or 6.0.4 here

    http://www.oldapps.com/download.php?...Tunes6.0.4.dmg

    http://www.oldapps.com/download.php?...=iTunes701.dmg

Let me know if this doesn't help.

    Hey man,

If you can't really get the iTunes running why not use windoes media player 11?

Also if you need a software to load songs into your ipod you should use http://www.vonnieda.org/vPod/

Windows Media Player 11 is what I am using currently, however iTunes is more user friendly on organizing music into playlists. WMP is still clunky even in the new version. I miss the ease of use of iTunes on this PC. I have it running on another PC with no problem, however the PC I use day to day is the one it will not install on.

    That sucks,

let's try from the beginning. Go to Program Files and see if you see any folder called iTunes, Apple, QuickTime.

If you do delete them. Then go to start menu. Select run. type "regedit"

search (ctrl + F) for itunes, quicktime and apple one after another and delete all registries.

Also be careful when you do this, because you will be editing the registries that operate your system. You might end up loosing some data.

    Good luck.

I don't like the new iTunes either, and I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I'm also using MacOSX and I'm having the same problem as *lena*. I deleted everything on the list and when I try to install 6.0.4, all the options are disabled when I get to custom install. Should I delete everything else iTunes I can find as well?
    Thanks!

I would say instead of deleting everything just put it in another fodler and remember the original locations.

I know it work for most of the users but you never want to take a chance. So that way if something goes wrong you have a backup.

    Good Luck.
