There are several cases which computers cannot detect a gadget specially when plugged in the usb port. Don't be alarmed. If your I POD is charging when plugged in the port it means both computer and I POD is running. All you need to do is to check what kind of usb port you have. Here's how:

1)Click my computer then right click
    2)choose property
3)In the tabs above choose hardware
    4)Choose device manager
5)Click the + sign at the side of the universal bus controller

Now what you need to do is to see if all ports is running. If not try to auto find the hardware appropriate for your I POD. You computer will actually finds its way to a website where they offer several drives for ports.

If this doesn't solve your problem, have a technician look at your I POD. This is you second move. They might restart to to its original state for the I POD to start running.

And one more thing there are Port or usb Ports that doesn't detect a gadget if you are using a long connector. Some ports prefer a short connector wire. <----- this works all the time.
