Updating a G4

Over recent years, I have become very negligent of updating my software etc, even afraid to do so, in case what does actually work on my G4 actually stops working!

However, today I ventured into the nearest branch of Apple store, in Southampton, and they told me I really should not be nervous of doing so... so... I hit update on everything that has come up on my automatic software updater.

I had hoped my operation system might update (I'm currently on 10.3.9 - is that Panther?), but it has stayed the same as before. Is that all I can expect on a G4? (Shame if so, because I now need a higher op system for some new music software I wish to use.)

Many thanks. (I have many other questions, about iTunes, Quicktime & many other apps, Entourage etc, which have not worked either at all or perfectly for ages, but which I have done without or tolerated! Will be back with more questions on those later, as it's about time I got with it!)
