is there anyway i can roll back my iTunes 8.x library to iTunes 7.7? then i would be ok.

i am going to uninstall all the Apple published software on my machine right now, meaning:

    Apple Software Update
    Bonjour
    MobileMe Control Panel
    Safari

i will then try to reinstall iTunes 7.7, and perhaps this time -- miraculously -- it will not provide the runtime error.

this isn't fun. i have had BSOD's since December, whereon i thought it was the wireless connection at a hotel in which my family was spending winter vacation. only in the last month did i realize that iTunes is the problem.
Yes uninstall everything. Then go to your Music folder and then go to iTunes folder. There you will find a file called "iTunes Music Library" move that file to your desktop. The download older version of itunes from here and install it. See if that can help.

Also if you are familiar with Memory Test, download iso and see if there is any problems with your computer memory. For more help on how to use memtest please read this: Tutorial: How to use Memtest - TechSpot Troubleshooting

    Can you provide the following:
    1. Complete list of errors you encountered.
    2. I tunes version you are using.
After receiving this information, i will post a step by step guide on how to solve your problem.

Thank and have a good day.

Apple itune 8 normally doesn't have a issue on Vista powered machines. BSOD errors usually occurs when you have a registry problem. You can try fixing it by using a reliable registry cleaner and then try reinstalling the iTunes application again.

OK, so the 7.7.1 install first failed, and said that i had to reinstall later. So I hit the installer .exe file. This time it installed without error.

I then went to run it from the Start Menu. Here's what happened next.

    1. Error: "Itunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. <Close Program>" (I haven't gotten this with 7.x, but it was very common when running 8.x).

    2. There was an error at the lower right stating "iTunes was closed ...for security reasons ...blocked the startup." It said to click for more info.

    3. I then get a popup entitled "What is Data Execution Prevention? Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature ... " I hit the X on that.

These items are repeatable. That is, when I try again to run iTunes from the Start menu, all 3 things happen in the same order. Same thing happens if I launch iTunes from the icon on the desktop.

Just to go the extra mile here, I found Local Disk/Users/Jon/AppData/Local/Apple Computer/iTunes. But that just contains "iPod Devices" and "iTunesPrefs."

I seem to be digging a bigger and bigger hole here.

Maybe I should upgrade to the latest Microsoft OS (post Vista)? Has anyone tried that?

It's the data execution prevention program that kept you from using itunes. Open that program and see if there are choices that will make your itunes accessible.
