i'm trying to go back from an Apple-downloaded 8.x install on Vista to 7.7.1 because of the blue-screen-of-death and crash problems with 8.x. however, i was frustrated to see that the 7.7.1 from old apps fails. it complains of missing files. i then try to repair the install by clicking on the setup file again. this time it almost finishes, but hangs on "reigistering iTunes automation server."
do i have to go further back than 7.7.1 to get something working?

Ok so you would want to install quicktime alone without itunes first and then if you install itunes it should work fine for you. Download quicktime player alone from Old Version of QuickTime Player Download and then run the itunes installer.
Unleashing Potential for Change
I think it doesn't work on a 32 bit machine. Try this one. Download the itunes and install it and if some files are missing you can download it in google. Example, if you install i tunes and got an error message like "xxxx.dll missing", go to Google and type xxxx.dll download and once it's finish copy it in the i tunes folder.![]()
We help not because we need to but we help because we want to.........there's a big difference between "need" and "want"
I too have had problems with Vista and iTunes. I have downloaded iTunes 4 times and on the fifth try I downloaded 7.2 (37 mb) 29 May,2007 from oldapps.com. Go to Music Utilities open iTunes and click on the 7.2 download button. It took. I saved all of my music & music videos on a external storage drive and deleted anything that had a iTunes name or logo on it.
Uninstall Itunes & Quick Time. Then download iTunes 7.2. After you install 7.2 Quick Time will also download with iTunes, open iTunes go to iTunes Store & download 1free song. You might have to authorize your computer again. When the song downloads try to play it. If it plays your in. This should work If it takes. you should have no problems. P.S I have over 10,000 songs in my iTunes library not including music videos. Hope this works this is part of pay it foreward. Sidro
If the 7.2 gives you any problems I have some tips that might help!! I downloaded a total of 5 times. 5 different Itunes programs the 7.2 got it right the first time. I also have a 32 Bit OS. Sidro

Get Old Versions
I'm still flailing around. In my case, removing Quicktime enabled me to install iTunes 7.7.
however, when i try to run iTunes, I get a message to the effect that my iTunes library isn't compatible with iTunes 7.7. i never got this with iTunes 8.x, i.e. on the few times that it would start up and not immediately produce a BSOD.
is there anyway i can roll back my iTunes 8.x library to iTunes 7.7? then i would be ok.
i am going to uninstall all the Apple published software on my machine right now, meaning:
Apple Software Update
Bonjour
MobileMe Control Panel
Safari
i will then try to reinstall iTunes 7.7, and perhaps this time -- miraculously -- it will not provide the runtime error.
this isn't fun. i have had BSOD's since December, whereon i thought it was the wireless connection at a hotel in which my family was spending winter vacation. only in the last month did i realize that iTunes is the problem.
