Here's a different method than Mr Slave's to prevent v8.5 giving you update nags. It worked for me on XP, with only very minor side effects of the sort that don't matter. Could be a better method in that other people's Messenger clients won't think you have a more recent version of Messenger than you do, which could mess up the working of some of the more advanced features of their program when trying to use them with you.
(1) Delete all program-created shortcuts to Windows Messenger in your Start menu, the Desktop, and Quick Launch section of the Taskbar (if the latter exist). If you're not using Classic Start Menu, check the Start menu carefully for said shortcuts via All Programs. You do the above because otherwise they're non-standard shortcuts which attempt to 'repair' the installation after you modify it.
(2) Make shortcuts in the places you deleted them, in the usual manner, to msnmsgr.exe , the Windows Live Messenger executable (use Search to find it if you're not sure where it is). Rename them to, err, Windows Live Messenger.
(3) On every shortcut you create, right click->Properties. Select the Compatibility tab. Tick 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and select 'Windows 2000' in the scrollbox. Then click the OK button to save the setting.
Voilą, you have done it!
Good choice of program version BTW, prior versions have security issues so they should not be used.
Be sure to patch the program with "A-Patch for Windows Live Messenger 8.5", available here:
A-Patch for Windows Live Messenger, MSN Messenger & Yahoo! Messenger . If a person in real life spat an advertisement at you with every sentence, you would surely disable them too! F*** you Micro$oft.
Enjoy your 'rectified' Windows Live Messenger![]()
