...and of course it doesn't read it or install it...so what do i do? I have an iMac OS 9.2 (I know it's old) I want to update it but how can I change it to the right application for downloads to be opened in so that i may install them? Some errors even say "the application it was created in can not be found"

We help not because we need to but we help because we want to.........there's a big difference between "need" and "want"
Can you give me another day or so to finalize my solution. Thank you for your patience.

I am go8ing to assume you are using IE since mos tof the planet does that, open up the program then click on tools then the application tabg, there is a checkbox for helper apps make sure that acroreader is not listed here this is why everythignopens in it or at least tries to.
Is there an acrobat reader installed in your Computer.....If so try removing acrobat reader first then download the program using a download manager.....After downloading the program.......try to install it......i hope this works because when i try this step to my computer it works but my computer is Windows based and i hope it also works under mac OS based computer like yours.
