I was in the same situation, One day my skype 1.4 ask me for upgrade an I could not install new version, because it is for windows xp not windows98.
Now, I have installed Skype 3.0.0.218, it works fine.

Skippy, maybe you should try what networkman posted. Maybe if you install skype 3.0.0.218 then maybe it will also work out just fine.

I tested installing Skype 3.0.0.218 on a windows 98 machine and it works great.

Skippy is correct. It's not the PC rejecting Skype, it's Skype that has stopped working due to 'forced upgrade'. You have no choice, either upgrade or quit. If you upgrade, you will get current Skype V4, which will not work with Win 98, it's Win 2000 or later. The problem is, each new Skype version is bigger, more bloated, with a worse interface, and uses more ram and bandwidth, and has more excess features that you don't need; such as shopping, keypad, broadcast etc. Thanks, Skype.
Roipatrick is also mistaken in that reinstalling the same old version of Skype will not work - immediately you have done that and reconnect, the same 'upgrade now' box will pop up again.
For those of us running perfectly good Win 98 machines, slow machines, or minimalists, this constant upgrade cycle is a pain. Skype 2.5 is the earliest version that will still connect to the network. Skype 3.8.0.188 is the latest version that will still run on Windows 98.
I'm still trying to find a fix to how Skype *keeps* trying to run every time computer starts-up, even when you have set it not to.
You can stop the skype from running everytime you turn on your computer by editing msconfig.
Go to Start and click Run,
Type msconfig
and you will end up at a window like this one:
Uncheck Skype and you should be good to go![]()

Get Old Versions
i thought skype will allow older version of their programs with no force upgrade installed in it. Oh well, maybe we'll just have to wait or scumbles guide and maybe it can help solve many problems regarding skype.

i have been reading here in the last weeks.
to be honest:
that is 100% what i want, if possible, i will wait for your "trying".
the more and more ram story and "features" that we do not want is a 10000% agree!
it is like cars, they have some new systems like 25 airbags, etc.
in the end, the car is heavier and heavier......needing more fuel, power.
we all will face the consequence in the future.
We'll just have to wait for scumbles guide for now.
