Partitions is only a space where we can install an operating system. This is the manual partitions. Partition you are pertaining are automatic partitions which installers create automatically for special purposes. Linux and Windows can be done under one PC but we must assure that both of them has enough space to support the whole operating system.

No, you can't normally install Linux on only 1 partition. As far
as I know you need at least 3 partitions, called:
- Root, the system files
- Home, your own files
- Last but not least: a swap partition in any case !

If you install Ubuntu 9.04 using only the default settings, it will create one large partition. So, yes you can install to a single partition.

But it's always best to install to the three partitions as described in the quote above.
