I totally agree. If you want people to use your software, give them a free basic version and you will sell more copies of the paid version. It's great marketing.
Roxio used to give away a fantastic version of Easy CD Creator 5 years ago that worked on Win 98 through XP. In fact, I think I still have it somewhere. But it was a great way to get users to become loyal followers of your brand.
I only wish more companies had this marketing plan. I remember in the old days, MS would give away Works on all new computers. Now they make you pay for it or go to a free version like
OpenOffice or
AbiWord, depending on your needs.
