i have been trying to connect to ares forever but nothing so i tried u torrent but nothing it says downloading but haven't moved. The arrow is red. i have tried new versions changed firewall but nothing. I am wondering if these are linked somehow. I have a dell studio with windows vista. It must be something i am missing. if anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated

It could be a firewall or your ISP provider. Have you tried using any other program?

Close you firewall before connecting. Firewall can cause great problem when connecting to the net.

turning off firewall will not solve problem but it will create problems for your pc.
because firewall is made to protect your pc
red arrow indicate that torrent is inactive 0 seeds or maybe removed.
plus, p2p download speed depends on how many seeds are active.
if noone is seeding that then u have no other choice without waiting.
it shows downloading but nothin happens that means those seeders upload speed is set on lowest speed(1kbps).
try some other torrent of that same file. or let us know what u are downloading we will help u to get that file
