Default PC Help - 3 Weeks Ago

Well, I got a PC that runs Windows 2000..It was a gift that someone got from a Church tag sale....meaning there some problems with it first off after the start-up screen the picture bascially goes from pefect to a mess its like the picture is duplicated and overlapping each other..and of course a used computer can't be complete without someone neglecting to erase their password off the computer...Any suggestions(other than throw it away)?

Hey JD,

Welcome to the forums. I thik the issue is with your monitor and not with the computer itself. Try plugging in another monitor and see if that helps you at all.

Also can you post a little more details about the computer such as what company made it and if possible also post the model number for that PC.

Thank you. The computer is completely barren of any markings except the names of the CD Drive-48X max and the HP CD Writter Plue 8200 Series..but the monitor is a Packard Bell monitor made in 1991..I really thought it was the computer thats why I didn't think too much about it... do you know a way that I can get past the old user's password encryption?

I would suggest to just format the hard drive and install a new system on it. But if you really want to bypass the password I'd use this: http://tinyurl.com/yh78cym

first of all if its got a password inthe old admins name you could try this
at the password prompt type in administrator
for the password leave this blank in some cases it will allow you to boot into windows
as fara sthe screen goes it might be the internal vid card is either dying or already gone in which case jstu toss a new vid card inthe slot and try that
in worst case jsut put new OS onthe system and be done with it as suggested

That the first thing I tried. I was trying to find alternate ways of getting by the password encryption other than formatting the hard drive, which brings me to this question. How do you format a computer that you can't even access?

You can format a computer's hard drive very easily. What you will have to do is get a hold of some soty of Operating system disk. Let's say you get Windows 2000 or Windows XP disk.

Now put that into your DISK Drive and let it boot from the CD.

When it boots directly from the CD, it will ask you if you want to upgrade your system or do a clean install.

Here's what you're going to do.

The overlapping pictures.

  1. The problem might be the video driver. Even though the video card is installed if the driver is not installed, the video will not function accordingly.
The Password:

  1. First, try this one. Reboot the computer then continuously press f8. This will bring you to safe mode. Safe mode will show all users of the computer specially the administrators account which generally cannot be deleted. This account has been installed there upon formatting the computer.
  2. Click it and hope it has no password. This administrator account can only be password protected if you knew it was there. In normal booting or normal mode you cannot see it upon users account options.
The Re-formatting of hard drive.
  1. Insert the CD.
  2. Reboot computer, then press del continuously until it brings you to BIOS.
  3. Look for the booting device priority and select cd as the 1st boot.
  4. Press f10 to save and exit.
  5. When the sign "Boot to cd......" appear press space bar.
  6. Follow the instructions upon formatting and installing of your new operating system.

Thank you and have a great day.
