I agree with nash4479 that avira also protects aganist spywares and rootkits.
These are useful as these days we get lots of viruses through removable drives,
Avira Antivir Personal Edition is free and it offers more protection than Avast (only detects viruses for free version)and AVG(detects viruses and basic spywares only for free version), it does not only detects viruses, it also detects trojans and malwares, as well as rootkits. The scanning engine it uses are based on advanced heuristic detection technology, which allows it to detect viruses that contain the similiar malicious code, therefore it does not have to rely solely on its virus defination database and this allows it to remove more viruses than other antivirus products.

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object?
Totally Agreed! I just switched to Avira last day because Avast's virus definitions went buggy and it's having some false virus detections.

@JoVinz, can you describe the problem in more detail? I'm also using Avast right now after writing off AVG Free 9. Want to switch to Free Avira but its website says "Basic protection:- Protects your computer against dangerous viruses, worms, Trojans and costly dialers. New: Basic Anti-Spyware." Is that sufficient level of protection? Any advice is welcome.
yes the free version of avira is better than AVG and AVAST, as it has protection with malware also
