i-pod will not worth with i-tunes 10

i had i-tunes 9.0 and when i hooked up a 4th 'g' i-pod it worked,then i updated to i-tunes 10 it will not .It put the music on the i-pad and as far as i can go is the 1st screen where you pick the language,then if i shack it side to side the cover flow holding it side ways,then it will go to now playingup right then i can play music,EVERY THING ELSE DOES NOT WORK,WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG HELP PLZ
