Hey zbarone,
I really appreciate your help to bring this to my attention. I will try to fix it as soon as possible.
Hello!
Today I went to the site to get Winamp 2.81 (winamp281_lite.exe) for a machine running Windows 2000. I am using FireFox. Upon trying to execute the installer, I get "Winamp installer verification failed".
Here are some things I did to help rule out a problem on my end:
+Checked that machine for any virus with up to date Clamwin, it appears to be clean.
+Checked winamp281_lite.exe itself with an up to date McAfee virus scanner on a different computer--didn't find anything.
+Tried running the file on two other machines; one was a fresh install of Win2K (just yesterday, in fact), and the other is a Thinkpad also running the same OS. Got the same error message on these too.
+Downloaded the file from oldapps.com on a linux box using mozilla, then compared that file with the one dowloaded on the Windows machine using sum and md5sum. Results are exactly the same for both.
Then I went to oldversion.com and intalled their copy of Winamp 2.81, and it worked just fine.
It seems to me the file on this site could be corrupt, or something bizarre is happening at this end. Can someone else try downloading and running the file? Here's what I have for comparison:
File: winamp281_lite.exe
Exact size in bytes: 507935
16 bit checksum: 30785
md5sum: b336e8090f43afc57e3f58524ee827f0
The checksum and file size were checked both using linux and Windows (with Cygwin).
Cheers,
Zbarone
