A friend of mine received an e-mail with a .gz file extension. How do we open files like this?

The gzip developers recommend using 7-Zip (freeware).

A .gz file is mime application/x-gzip-compressed. These kinds of files are compressed archives which mean that in order to open these files you have to decompress the file using a gzip-compatible program.
