    Default Still not getting it...

I've followed all of the directions (I think) given in this thread but my iTunes is empty. Do I need to import the iTunes Library file (the old one) or should it just be there? Incidentally, importing that file did not work, it gave me an error message. Any help wold be appreciated because I would really prefer not to redo all the work that I put into organizing my music.

    Thanks in advance.

    Default Okay...

...nevermind. I just did an "Add Folder" and added the entire My Music folder (about 48 Gigs). It looks like all album names and organization are there, just some duplicates that were in the folder, which is good since I now know what I can clean out and open up some hard drive space.

Now, if only someone could tell me how to fix my iPod which is now a $350 paperweight...

Hehe... well, that's a long story that should probably be in another thread but since you asked, here's the "short" version:
Back in June, I started having problems with it showing a song on the screen (without actually playing it), switching to the next song, then the next, and so on, every 3 or 4 seconds. While the iPod was doing this, none of the buttons were responsive. I couldn't even turn it off. After calling the support line, they just told me to do the "reset" function, which did temporarily remedy the problem. I ended up having to reset it abour 2 or 3 times a week though. Finally, in October it became more frequent and I ended up seeing the "sad face" icon on the screen and it eventually just died to the point of not even showing anything on the screen or even trying to power on. I took it to an Apple Store 2 nights ago and even though it's an iPod-HP, the guy looked at it and took it to the back room. He came back about 30 seconds later and the thing worked. He said the hard drive was "stuck" and he gave it a "kickstart". Anyway, after charging it up that night, I listened to a song the next morning and as soon as I tried to change the song, it started doing the original song-skipping thing and then gave me the "sad face" again. So I'm back to square one (and out of warranty, no less).

The problem with the the iPod dying (in October) did happen immediately after I updated both my iTunes and iPod software, though it may be just a coincidence since it is probably hardware related.

Sorry for highjacking this thread. Feel free to move it to a different one.

If that guy at the apple store charged you take it back there and tell him the story.

If he didn't charge you, go there and urge him to fix it for you. But I recommend you to sell this ipod and get a new one

By the way, if you have some free time, you might want to install linux on it for fun and see if it works

    good luck.

Default Thanks for moving this thread.

No, he didn't charge me anything. But, when I called back the next day to let them know what happened, they said that the guy went above and beyond normal protocol since they usually don't repair the HP versions. Something about HP won't let them. So, yeah, my plan is to sell it to a refurbishing company and get a new one. If anyone has any suggestions as to the best place to sell it, they would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if I would be able to install anything to it since my PC doesn't even recognize it as an external drive anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions though. This forum has been very educational for me in the short time I have been here.

    Default Thank you.

Thanks, 007. I'll check these out. I've also found that many of the sites that offer iPod repair may also buy broken ones. Oh, and while I have many geeky friends, unfortunately, none of them are smart enough to know how to fix iPods.

    Thanks again.
