Question Trying to get back to iTunes version 4.8

have had a problem with getting iTunes installed ever since I tried to install version 5. Evidently there was an issue with that install and it would give an error message that some of the installation files were corrupt and then freeze up. The only way it could be ended was to end from task manager.

Ever since then I have tried almost every new version and continue to get the same error "Unable to remove old version of iTunes".

I noticed this site referenced on a post in the apple disscussion forum and started thinking that maybe I could re-install the iTunes version 4.8 and see if that would function or not.

I downloaded the 4.8 version and now when I try to install it, I get a message saying that a new instance of the installer cannot be created.

    Any ideas?

If I could get 4.8 to work, then maybe I could use "add/remove" to uninstall it and then go to a newer version. At least that is what I would like to do.

I am on Windows XP Pro SP2.

You should go to add/remove programs and first try version 6.0 and then if that doesn't work go ahead and try version 4.8

Although, I have never tried installing 4.8, I assume after u uninstall the newer install it would be pretty simple

    Good Luck

I wish it were that simple. The problem is there is no indication of iTunes or QuickTime being currenly installed. I have tried the "add/remove" option and there is nothing listed. I have also tried the "install cleanup" utlility and it finds nothing as well. I have gone so far as to clean the registry of all references to iTunes, iPod, QuickTime, and even Apple. I still get the same errors.

As I stated in my original post, the last functioning version was 4.8. When I tried to upgrade to 5.0 is when I started having problems since the install application has some kind of bug in it. Nothing has successfully installed since then.

I was hoping that somehow I could get back to version 4.8, however I get the error in the image attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hey Jecmis,

Have you tried searching for keywords "iTunes" or "quicktime" and finding all related folders to it.

If not go to start menu --> select search. First search for iTunes and remove all unnecessary folders and do the same with quicktime player.

Let me know what happens if you try to install after that.

I actually found some references to iTunes in some subfolders. I got rid of those and retried 4.8 as well as 7.01 and neither would complete installing.

4.8 got a message that says it can't create a new instance of the intaller and 7.01 got a message that says unable to remove older version of iTunes.

    Any other ideas?

It sounds like you need to backup everything and reload your OS.

I don't want to do that unless there are no other options!

I didn't want to be mean there. Since you really wanted to install the newer version I suggested to reload ur OS. You can of course ask in other forums but I think the only solution I see to you problem is to reload the Windows.

In the future if you do find some other solution please post it here so other users can benefit from it

    Regards,
    Rick.

Close all programs before beginning an installation is typically recommended. There are some programs that cannot properly install with background files running, and they often could damage open program files, turning them "corrupt."

The error you received was because you probably had something running during the installation, I assume. I've been guilty of this when my Java got corrupt. What happens is your registry keys are messed up and basically you should delete those to get to the root of the problem. However, what makes it a bigger problem is you gotta know what you are doing with the registry or else any changes in those keys will do something undesirable. You cannot use intuition to solve it this way, but what you can do is let me try to find another solution (other than reformating) I hope this gives you an idea on what I've read so far from trying to figure out a problem I had with Java..

I am going to reformat my computer anyways, and I will try to recreate the problem to help you out because that thing pissed me off with Java. Their website didn't even help me, and I tried e-mailing also. I think you are stuck in that position too, assumably.

BUT in the mean time: if you haven't solved this problem and can't find any help anywhere else especially on the iTunes website... start backing up some files to prepare to reformat. Today is Friday for me, and check back in 2-3 days. I'll ask around and come up with an answer Sunday, Monday at the latest.

    Thanks.

I am not eager to reinstall XP since it will take a while to get back to where I am at this point. So, I hope you find another process that I can take to get back to iTunes 4.8.
