Unhappy iTunes 3.01 stuck in shuffle mode

Hi. I've just inherited an ibook G3/700mhz running Mac OSX 10.2., iTunes 3.01 and Quicktime 6.0.1

The window for itunes seems permanently set in shuffle mode, ie: just a tiny window displaying the name of one song at a time, randomly selected from the mp3s on my computer. There's no access to the library and all options associated with the library have been disabled, eg: 'New Playlist', 'Get Info', 'Show Song File', 'Play Next Song' etc. There's also no access to the itunes store: the 'Shop For iTunes Products' button goes straight through to the Apple Store - not the itunes music store.

I've checked all my preferences etc. and can't find the root of the problem.

Would be very grateful for any advice on how to sort this out.

    Thank you in advance
